This painting by an unknown Nuremberg artist shows a competition of the Master Singers' guild in a Nuremberg church. To the right, on what was called the "Singing Stool[WS1] ," stands famed Master Singer Hans Sachs, performing a song to the guild's strict rules. In a separate area to the left, four "Markers" sit at a table, listening carefully and deciding whether the text and performance obey the rules and the tune is sung correctly. The singer who makes the fewest mistakes in the contest will win a prize.
