"Grandma" Moses is widely regarded as one of the great American folk painters of the 20th century. She was known for her rural landscapes, which often depicted a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. This checkered house was a frequent subject in her paintings. The house, an inn along the Cambridge Turnpike, was a local landmark where stage coach drivers changed horses. It also served as a field hospital during the American Revolution. Laurance Rockefeller purchased this painting and hung it in the Mansion's breakfast room, along with folk art inherited from his mother, noted folk art collector Abby Aldrich Rockefeller.
