The Flemish cartographer Johannes Portantius drew up the first custom map of Livonia in 1573. It was printed in Abraham Ortelius’ atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”. Its depictions greatly conformed to reality, illustrating the land situation before the Livonian War. It also contained over 50 place names.
