A central focus of research and production at ZKM is the development of innovative immersive hardware and software solutions for artistic projects. One of the developments of the ZKM | Institute for Visual Media in the years 1995-2010 was the "PanoramaTechnology" - a display system consisting of a special projection environment, the "PanoramaScreen", and a specially developed software system for the display of the environment, the Panorama Display Software.

In addition to the development of two transportable panoramic screens, which allow for easy temporary installation at exhibition venues, the Institute for Visual Media installed the PanoramaLab in 2009 in the foyer of the ZKM, a location with a permanently installed and publicly accessible PanoramaScreen.

Parallel to the PanoramaScreen, the software system PanoramaDisplaySoftware was developed. The software allows high-resolution video projection onto surfaces of any shape via a multi-projection system, as well as manipulation of the projected image content in real time. The adaptability of the software in functionality and to projection environments makes it the ideal tool for artists.

A high-resolution 360° panoramic camera has been developed at the institute to capture 360° moving image material. The development was started in 1998 by Jeffrey Shaw, was taken over by Bernd Lintermann in 2005, and from then on a production pipeline for the recorded film data was realized. 4 prototypes of the camera were created, with which various artistic projects were realized.
