Having learned this gospel singing style from their father, the Paschall Brothers are the current torch-bearers of the long tradition of “Tidewater Quartets,” which included the likes of the Golden Gate Quartet and the Hampton Institute Quartets to name just a few. In the years between the Civil War and World War II there were over 200 quartets in the Hampton Roads area. The Paschall Brothers stand as one of the few Tidewater Quartets singing today. The Paschall Brothers participated in the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program in 2003.
