Known for his tonalist landscape paintings that demonstrate a poetic, subdued interpretation of nature, Murphy was born in Oswego, New York, and was almost entirely self-taught as an artist. He made his living primarily as an illustrator for periodicals. Influenced by the French Barbizon painters and by impressionism, he often based his landscape paintings on direct study from nature and was interested in light, seasons, and times of day.
