In the scene, Yang Xiong is sitting at a desk and readnig some books, followed by a servant. There is a phoenix tree next to the desk. At the upper left part of the painting, it is inscribed with a poem, a signature:"Autumn 1942 by Zhang Daqianyuan" and two seals:"Zhang Yuan" and "Daqian".
