The entry of Canaletto into the collection, which took
place by purchase only in 1995, signified an undoubted qualitative change for
the civic collection of Pinacoteca del Castello, expanding its range of
Venetian painting with some very important examples. Among
the numerous views of Venice, in this particular canvas a happy narrative synthesis
is achieved between the famous architectural scenes and the representation of
ordinary people engaged in their daily activities.
