The Pietà (Christ’s Lament)

Canova did not execute this work in marble. The group comprises three lifesize figures. The Virgin who is sitting majestically, Magdalen struck by intense and desperate pain, the laying Christ with his head on his mother’s knees. The scene, not strictly evangelical, is one of the artistic representations which has created great interest and commotion among believers through the centuries.
