The Pistol of Commandant Frenk

Koper Regional Museum

Koper Regional Museum
Koper, Slovenia

The Walther P-38 pistol is connected with a tragic story from the time of the National Liberation War. It was carried by 22-year-old Franc Planinc - Frenk from Bela krajina, who had come to Slovene Istria as a commandant of the hinterland unit of the Command of the Town of Koper. His headquarters, hidden in a natural bunker below the village of Hrpeljci in the hinterland of Koper, were discovered by the enemy and destroyed after a battle lasting several hours – the commandant took his own life with this pistol, while five members of his unit were captured. The brave resistance made an impression on the German commander and he formed a guard of honour for the commandant.
