Page from the programme of the premiere production of The Playboy of The Western World by John Millington Synge, first produced on 26th January 1907. The play was part of a double bill with a revival of another of his plays Riders to the Sea. The production met with opposition from many quarters, due to perceived slights to public morals and Irish womanhood. Performances in the latter part of the week took place with police protection.
