Charles W Wyllie was a versatile landscape and marine painter. Like his brother William Lionel, he specialised in views of docks and harbours. He is know to have painted a number of scenes on the Thames in and around London. This view, from the south bank, looks up river towards St. Paul’s in the distance. Thames lighter boats surround the steam-powered cargo ship, transferring goods from the ship to the dock.
