The portrait of Louise Élisabeth of France, Duchess of Parma

Louis Michel Van Loo

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma
Parma, Italy

The canvas portrays Louise Elisabeth of France, the favorite daughter of the King of France Louis XV, who married Duke Philip of Bourbon 1739. She became Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla in 1749. The artwork takes inspiration from the famous painting of the Spanish Royal family dated 1743, today in the Prado Museum. In fact, some almost identical details of the Madrid painting reappear in this artwork, such as the face of Louise Elisabeth, the left arm stretched out in her lap and the back of the armchair.
