While travelling through England and Scotland in 1826, Schinkel made sure to visit the Potteries in Newcastle under Lyme. He was suitably impressed, describing the Potteries as ‘the most wonderful facilities in a picturesque setting’ (Diaries, p. 43). He felt the ‘Egyptian’-inspired architecture to be a harmonious addition to the surrounding natural landscape.
