Cecioni’s naturalistic research for the true soul of his figures animates his works, as the artist is associated with the “School of Resina.” The sculptor, thanks tothe introspective force of his work and to the choice of such an anti-academic subject, earned the full appreciation of artists contemporary to him. The inspirational motive of this sculpture was the cast of a pregnant woman buried in Pompeii, observed by Cecioni, amongst the ancient victims of Mt. Vesuvius’s eruption.
