Yoshida Kenko (1283-1350) was a court official who took religious orders in 1324 to devote himself more exclusively to literature and poetry. A miscellaneous collection of his prose writings, Tsurezuregusa, written between 1324 and 1331 is his most famous work. The poem is based on the opening passage in Tsurezuregusa, whose title literally means The Grass of Idleness.
