The procession of Bacchus

"The Procession of Bacchus" must have been painted as part of an interior decor. Bacchus, god of wine and fertility, appears in a triumphal chariot drawn by panthers, accompanied by nymphs and satyrs and followed by the drunken Silenus on a donkey. The large number of elegantly agile figures evokes the great tradition of Neapolitan Baroque painting, but de Mura’s light, sometimes 17th to 18th-Century Italian Painting 153 cool colouring already anticipates Neo-Classicism.| Prestel Museum Guides - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017
