The Professor's Dream

Cockerell was a practicing architect (he designed Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum), but for a long time he dreamed of becoming ‘a professor of the beautiful in architecture’ – which may have led him to create imaginative drawings such as this one.

At the front are the oldest buildings, with newer buildings receding into the background.
