Tadeusz Kantor’s happening-related activities took shape in reference to European happening. During his numerous visits to foreign countries, the artist frequently observed practices consistent with the development of the trend. However, in the context of his own work, these experiences seem nothing more than inspiration that led him to individual conclusions. A happening-oriented tendency had been discernible in Tadeusz Kantor painting and theatre works – it seems – at least several years before he consciously followed the rules of happening. If one considers his entire artistic career, the stage when he focused on happening appears to be an inevitable consequence of the artist’s individual development. It should be remembered that in the area of happening, just like in many other creative fields – Kantor remains a pioneer in Polish art.
