The alternative title for this print by Durer is 'Young Couple Threatened by Death'. It is an allegory of the transience of youth and beauty: the couple is oblivious to the skeletal figure of Death lurking behind the tree trunk to the right.

Durer employs his skill as an engraver to depict the heavy drapery of the woman's skirt, the feather in the man's cap and the foliage at their feet. This print was probably produced once he had settled in Nuremberg and was widely sought after as a printmaker and draughtsman.
