View of a group of Union soldiers gathered in the remains of the earthworks at Fort Fisher after its capture from Confederate control. A wooden support structure sits in the earthen mound that surrounds the soldiers, complete with brick chimneys and angled ramps leading to the top. Several of the soldiers lean against a fence made of wood planks, surrounded by their rifles, which lean against each other in small groups to create cone-shaped pyramids.
