The Pygmies mosaic

2nd century AD

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica
Santiponce, Spain

This small bichrome mosaic is located in an area identified as a latrine inside the building called Edificio de la Exedra.

From top to bottom and from left to right, we see a pygmy attacking a heron with a spear, another one fishing, a third one riding a heron while attacking a dolphin with a spear and, finally, a heron pecking buttocks of another pygmy. Around this scene we see fish, squid, jellyfish, flowers and other herons, even carrying a shrimp in beak.

It was excavated around 1930 by Andres Parladé, Conde de Aguiar.
