Yordan KYUVLIEV’s art is an example of early Modernism in Bulgaria. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium in 1902 under prof. Julian de Vriendt. He returned to his hometown – Sliven in 1903 and worked as a teacher until his tragic death in 1910. He was a member of the Bulgarian group that participated in the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, USA.
The last works by Kyuvliev, namely seascapes painted in the seaside town of Nessebar (Messembria), are convincing proof of his talent. The use of light, fragmentary compositions and broad strokes are an example of post-Impressionism in Bulgaria at the late turn of the 20th century.
