This work is one from the series ‘The King of Night.’ Again, a moth came into the artist’s studio. This moth was smaller and brighter than the tiger moth from ‘The King of Night.’ The feminine features of the moth inspired Choi create ‘The Queen of Night.’

  • Critic's Note: Choi, Hyo Soon has accumulated splendid careers over 30 years with his creativity in his painting. In terms of his style, his work always has been expressed in his worldly experiences by using a surrealistic approach. He has been successful through the use of his unique painting techniques, the familiar subject matter of the cloud is continually inscribed in the viewer’s memory. He often uses symmetrical methods for his paintings in order to provide an exceptional composition. Moreover, the images from his work reflect the fact that he is simple and elaborate. He does not falsify things and use exaggerated colors in his work. By contrasting images that have different spaces and time, he shows continuous surrealistic themes in the basis of his work. He puts a great emphasis on creating the sky with impressionistic qualities. The reason for the use of simple images is closely related to Korean culture; that the nature in the work is depicted so that the viewer can easily regard it as alive and so can sense that the images are affected by the sunbeams. I assume that he draws pictures not from the formalities of surrealism, but from his long time meditation and deep experiences from them. I can say he is real artist who has created his own style and really enjoyed his time to meditate natural things. Furthermore, since he has put forth a lot of effort to develop his familiar images for us, we can be familiar with his art easily. I hope he will be able to release more works with this specific subject matter and provide positive affects on all of us, continually. I have no doubt that this exhibition will be very successful and he will get lots of feedback from all around the globe.
