This painting was particularly admired by Cardinal Federico as one of the finest works by Jacopo Bassano. Probably made in late 1547, it takes up a very popular theme in religious painting – the Holy Family resting on their flight into Egypt – but it shows it in a new and original manner. The scene focuses on Mary, who is seen holding the Child in her arms. Joseph lovingly contemplates him, while all around there are numerous realistic details (such as the swaddling bands in the foreground) and other figures (such as the two youths who appear to be restraining the donkey, and the shepherd kneeling on the left). The scene is complex and brought to life by great physical and psychological dynamism.
