In The Resurrection of Christ, which may be the best male nude executed in New Spain, we can discern a thorough knowledge of anatomy and the impeccable use of foreshortening which, together with an expert use of perspective and light, make this work a fine exemplar of neo-Hispanic painting. It should be pointed out that the Saviors body is revealed to the soldiers without any remaining signs of the suffering inflicted during the Passion, there being no traces of the nails or of the wound in His side, as if the Resurrection had cleansed Him of all signs of humiliating agony. In His left hand, Christ is holding the staff of a white standard bearing a red cross that betokens the triumph over death. These works passed to the MUNAL from the San Diego Viceregal Painting Gallery in the year 2000.
