The Ring was built as Surrey Chapel in 1782-3 for the evangelical preacher Reverend Rowland Hill. In the late 19th century, it was occupied by an engineering company, and from 1910 it was used as a boxing venue. The building was destroyed in a bombing raid during the Blitz.
