The Risen Christ before the Virgin

This oil on marble is part of a series exhibited in the Under-Cloister Painting Room entitled 'The Paschal Mystery of Christ'. It depicts the risen Christ appearing to Mary, a theme that, although apocryphal, had important visual references in the 17^(th) century. The artist based his composition on Raffaello Schiaminossi's print of The Annunciation.
