This painting depicts Jiming Temple in Nanjing, China. Built in the Western Jin Dynasty, the temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city. It has been known as "Number 1" out of the 480 Temples of the Southern Dynasties.Xu Beihong taught at Nanjing Normal University for many years and resided at No. 6 Fu Hou Gang. He passed by the Jiming Temple on the way from his house to the university almost every day, and he created this work and a large number of sketches.
