In performing its mission, the Roman Catholic Church brought the youths of many diverse ethnic groups from various regions, under the umbrella of
religious faith. This led to the establishment of Roman Catholic communities that also fertilized the spirit of nationalism. The church was also active inbuilding hospitals and education facilities. With regards to the aspiration for an independent Indonesia, the Political Association of Indonesian Catholics enthusiastically became on of the co-signer of the Soetardjo Petition of 1936 that demanded the colonial government to relinquish its authority to Indonesia.. In the 1945 - 1949 war
for Independence, the Catholic Church also stood side by side with the people of many different backgrounds and ethnic groups in the quest to abolish colonialism and maintain the independence of the nation.
