The Royal Hospital Kilmainham was designed, along the lines of Les Invalides in Paris, to be a home for invalided soldiers. Dating from 1680, it is the oldest classical building in Ireland, and some of its earliest residents were soldiers wounded at the Battle of the Boyne.
