The Royal National Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest was built in 1868-70. Set out in a linear fashion, its ten three- or four-storey, south-facing blocks extended for over a quarter of a mile.
The hospital closed in 1964 and was demolished in 1969. The site is now Ventnor Botanic Gardens.
