Brighton developed as a sea-bathing resort in the 18th century. By the 1750s, it had bathing machines, a spa, an assembly room and a library. In 1783, the Prince of Wales visited the resort for the first time. The future king was so enamoured with Brighton he employed Henry Holland to enlarge a farmhouse into a royal seaside residence. John Nash later extended the building to create an exotic ensemble of Indian, Islamic, Gothic and oriental styles.
