In 1930, two private parties drove Studebaker President-powered cars at the Indianapolis 500. One of those cars, the #22 "Russell 8", was piloted by Russell Snowberger to an impressive 8th overall finish. The success of the "Russel 8" and other private entries in 1930 and '31 convinced Studebaker to support a full factory-backed team in 1932.
