Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

According to the Old Testament, God put Abraham’s faith to the test by commanding him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Just in the nick of time, an angel of the Lord appeared, forestalling the terrible deed and delivering Abraham from his despair. Rembrandt shows the moment of redemption, Abraham recognizing the mercy of God. He will offer a ram in the place of his child.
