The Scalp depicts its Sioux subject holding the scalp of his enemy aloft in triumph. The tension between the stereotyped savagery of the figure and its heroic treatment creates a subject to be both feared and admired. Remington created 22 different subjects in bronze. The Scalp was the fourth sculpture.
