A scene from the school of the Scottish Episcopal Church Mission in Budapest. At the right side of the photo is Jane Haining, inspector of the girls’ college. At the beginning of the war the staff of the mission received instructions to return home. Haining denied the orders, as she didn’t want to leave the children put into her care. She stuck to her little protégés until the very end, until Auschwitz. She was arrested and charged with espionage for the British, and subsequently deported to Auschwitz and murdered in the gas chamber.
