This image by pioneering Scottish photographers D. O. Hill and Robert Adamson depicts the Scott Monument in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens. The monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp and inaugurated in 1846. Standing over 61 metres high, it arches over a huge marble statue of Scott by Sir John Steell, and is adorned with 96 statuettes of Scott’s characters. This photograph was taken as work on the monument neared completion.
