The muralists were privileged in their great compositions with a critical subject, at times epic, on the great vices and virtues of man and his institutions in the course of history. Nonetheless, a good part of modern Mexican painting did not share those aesthetic currents, on the contrary, they went deeper into the personal and intimate condition of the Mexican. Agustín Lazo was precisely a painter of the private dimension, of the unique personal tragedies and joys that on many occasions were included in a cryptic way in his works. The lyric vein of his subject matter gives him a close link to the poets of the magazine Contemporáneos, but also to the art of Surrealism that he became familiar with directly from his stay in Europe. La costurera is a piece by Agustín Lazo that reminds us, in its color, of a certain period from the palette of Franz Marc and André Lhote. The painting appeared in the catalog of the Hall of Painting of 1945, of the Gallery of Decoration Art.
