Next to Nuremberg's oldest parish church, the classicist Main Guardhouse was built in 1810 as a "symbol of the Bavarians' taking possession." On absorption into the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806, Nuremberg lost its self-governing status as a Free Imperial City.
