The Sedition Act of 1798

The Sedition of 1798 criminalized making false statements critical of the federal government. It was used by the Adams's administration to arrest and prosecute several prominent supporters of Jefferson, including journalist James Thomson Callender, Congressman Matthew Lyon Lyon, and Benjamin Franklin Bache, editor of the Aurora.
