Simple portrait of a soldier at first sight, The Sentinel shows the silhouette of Napoleon, almost imperceptible in the background given the similarity of the tones used for the Emperor's famous gray frock coat and the tree trunks of the undergrowth. The hierarchical importance of the figures has been inverted by this depiction which, backwardly, highlights the importance of the leader whose protection relies on the loyalty, devotion, and obedience of his men. Behind the grenadier leading the guard to the edge of the undergrowth, we can see Napoleon's profile, alongside his staff.
