The sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens) is a large, fast-growing evergreen tree that can reach 100 metres in height, with a straight trunk, reddish bark and a pyramidal crown. It is native to the western USA, where it grows in Pacific coastal forests up to 1000 metres above sea level. They are one of the tallest trees in the world and are very long-lived, sometimes exceeding 3000 years.
This specimen, located in the Tropical Woodland in the Arboretum, is one of the outstanding specimens of the University of Porto Botanical Garden and was planted in 1952.
