The Sergeant, completed in 1904, was copyrighted by Remington as “Bust of a Rough Rider Sargeant (sic).” This portrait of a craggy-faced veteran in neckerchief and hat is a tribute to the cowboy-soldiers who volunteered for service in the Spanish-American War. Remington created 22 different subjects in bronze. The Sergeant was the eleventh sculpture.
