The Settlement is situated close to the centre of Letchworth, the first garden city. It was built as The Skittles Inn in 1907 to designs by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. It had a skittle alley and bar but sold no alcohol. In 1923 it became an adult education centre and was renamed The Settlement.
