The illuminator depicted a sequence of actions by showing the same angel at three different moments, arranged from left to right. On the left, the angel swings a golden censer and holds up a bowl to the hand of God to be filled with incense. To the right, this same angel fills the censer with the fire from the altar. The angel then casts the fire on the earth to the right, unleashing thunder, lightning, and a great earthquake, as the text describes.
