Landscape painter popular in the 1800s and a student of the teacher Modest Urgell. Joan Roig Soler spent long periods on the coasts of Italy and Andalusia, where he explored the effects of light in his paintings. From 1878 until his death in 1909, Roig Soler produced beautiful renderings on canvas of the beaches and coasts of Mallorca, Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Tossa, Blanes, Lloret de Mar and other towns along the Costa Brava. He also painted the area around the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the regions of Ripollès and Cerdanya, as well as several urban views of Barcelona. Joan Roig Soler was impulsive and vigorous by nature, and he managed to evoke these moods on his canvases by means of violent contrasts, dramatic cloudscapes and intense colours and effects of the light. This painting shows a group of old boats converted into shanties on the beach of Malgrat.
