As a budding artist, Vincent van Gogh drew endless copies of work by Jean-François Millet, whom he greatly admired. Years later, during his stay in the mental hospital in Saint-Rémy, he ‘translated’ a series of black and white prints after Millet into colour in his studio. He explained: ‘It’s a study I need, for I want to learn.’
