This is believed to be the earliest version of the Shepherd of Banbury's rules on how to judge the weather. The rules include many genuinely useful signs of changes in the weather. Despite their age their accuracy meant that many were included in the Meteorological Glossary in the early 20th Century. On this page we see an early version of the phrase better known today as 'Red sky in the morning, Shepherds Warning; Red Sky at night, Shepherds delight'.
