  • About the craft: The Singpho people reside in the villages of Lohit and Changlang districts of eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh, and believe that they had migrated from upper Myanmar and northern Thailand, centuries back. According to historical accounts, Singphos are the original indigeneous tea makers of India. They have practised brewing their traditional smoked bamboo tea for generations, along with the neighbouring Tangsa community. Historical documentation states that an Assamese nobleman, Maniram Dutta Barua (also known as Maniram Dewan) knew that the Singphos grew tea that was unknown to the rest of the world, and introduced Robert Bruce to Singpho Chief, Bessa Gaum, to explore trade possibilities.
